Candy Cane Lane lights up South Bay during the holiday season

From now until New Year’s Night, South Bay residents can look forward to the city of Torrance’s annual holiday treat, which this year celebrates its 39th anniversary: Candy Cane Lane, near the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Calle Mayor.

The tradition started in 1984 by Torrance resident Bob Solomon after he saw his neighbors decorating their house across the street. Inspired, he asked other neighbors to start decorating the trees around their block, which led to the entire neighborhood jumping on the bandwagon and decking out their homes. The block-party celebration grew bigger every year. Starting in November, Torrance residents begin decorating and spreading their holiday cheer.

Thanks to its residents, the street is transformed into a dreamy, snowy winter wonder-land. People gather at Candy Cane Lane to admire and gaze at the extravagant lights and Christmas decorations that enliven the block. The neighborhood is full of vibrant colors that sprinkle the streets.

“My favorite part was driving around, listening to Christmas music and seeing the recurring lights and decorations,” said senior Chloe Dileva. “It was so much fun to just enjoy the Christmas spirit with my friends.”

Along with the festive scenery, the delicious smells of hot chocolate, street food and holiday treat such as churros and cookies, are enjoyed by those who stop by to visit.

In addition to the delicious food offered, Christmas music can be heard around the block to enhance the cheery mood.

Although there is considerable traffic throughout the neighborhood during the holiday season, it only gives visitors more time to admire the scenery.

“Yes, there was so much traffic,” Dileva said. “ It took us a while to get through and out of the neighborhood, but it was honestly really peaceful. It was part of the experience, and gave my friends and me more time to bond and look at the lights.”

Added junior Natalie Bernstein: “I went with a bunch of my friends from school. We all had so much fun, and it was a great bonding experience.”

Candy Cane Lane is not just a sight to see, but a place for people to create memorable experiences with family and friends. This popular tradition fosters festivity and creates a peaceful environment for those visiting, as well as an opportunity to bond over the Christmas spirit. “This was my first year going and it was kind of a last-minute choice,” Bernstein said. “But I’m so glad I did. It was so awesome and super cool that it’s local. I’ll totally go again next year!”
