As Rain Hits The Wick, Students Scramble

As hardy Californians, the weather is the last thing on our minds. Nearly any day of the year, you can walk out of your house and feel fine wearing only flip-flops, shorts and a Hawaiian shirt. While we’re savvy enough to throw on a sweatshirt once December hits, we rarely see the temperature drop below 50 degrees during the day.

So in the recent light of the rainy season, Chadwick students have been … going through it.

Whether this means racing from class to class to stay out of the downpour or hiding out in the Roessler bathrooms, students are doing whatever they can to stay dry. Our success level, however, may not be the best.

Some immediate signs of rain unpreparedness are hard to ignore: wet hair, pants that are a completely different shade than how they started or damp notebooks. But at just a passing glance, you may not be able to see the more difficult struggles that come with the rain. For all you readers out there who have fought through a day with wet socks, we feel you.

So in the interest of staying warm and dry, Mainsheet is happy to bring you all of our best advice for not only preserving your crisp new UGG boots and backpacks, but also making the best of your rainy-day experience.

These are some of our favorite dry hideouts, should the dreaded rain come again (meaning next week?!):

Leavenworth Library

Arguably the most popular hiding spot, the library is by default people’s go-to sanctuary when the rain pours on Academy Hill. With different spaces for different needs, the library is a cozy hideaway for all grade levels.

With a variety of lounge chairs, couches and collaborative table spaces, it’s not hard to see why the library is everyone’s preferred hangout spot.

The quiet area, on the bottom level, is perfect for students to grind away on assignments while shuffling their favorite rainy-day playlists. For those who need a quiet–yet–collaborative space, there are also conference rooms such as the FOL (Friends of the Library) Room that can cater to your needs. Just remember, clean up after yourselves, so Ms. Large won’t have to ban people for eating in the library.

Roessler Hall

The oldest building at Chadwick School has become one of students’ favorite places to stay dry. Just walking down the halls on a rainy day, you’ll see every room filled with clubs, friends or study groups. Even the Rotunda is packed, filled to the brim with the Class of ‘27.

And all of this is for good reason. With easily accessible bathrooms, projectors and whiteboards, Roessler offers all the ideal conditions for students to get work done or pass the time with friends. Should you ever need math, English or history help, too, Roessler houses all of your favorite faculty.

Laverty Center

Though known as the performing arts center, Lavery is one of Chadwick’s biggest indoor spaces. Along with housing the school’s grand theater, Laverty also has cozy nooks filled with comfy sofas and exceptionally clean bathrooms. While you’re at it, check out the upcoming musical, Legally Blonde, or our dance and choir classrooms on the second floor.

The Basement

Are you looking for a little more peace and quiet? Try the Roessler basement rooms! They used to be home to our very own Mainsheet operation. Now you can wander down there almost any time to get away from all of the noise. If you’re hoping to find a private area to relax or somewhere to rehearse a group presentation, the Roessler basement could be for you.

Lecture Hall

When available, the Lecture Hall is one of the prime spots on campus to get warm. With padded seats and lap desks, it is a great place to hide out and eat lunch with your friends (though not so great for taller people!). It’s also a good spot to get work done comfortably or work on group projects.

Are you trying to book it to Roessler from the science classes but aren’t sure you can make it all the way there? The Lecture Hall is right on your way! It’s the perfect pit stop, a place to regroup before heading back out to brave the latest storm.

Stay dry, Dolphins!
