Senior Meredith Kenney has left a significant mark on Chadwick’s lacrosse program, scoring an impressive 51 goals and adding 24 assists while leading the Dolphins into this week’s CIF Playoffs. As a three-year star, Kenney has been both the team’s most important offensive and defensive player, demonstrating exceptional skill and leadership on the field.
To prepare for games, Kenney relies on a routine of stretching and staying hydrated. She also enjoys listening to music, including tracks by Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga, through a speaker to energize the whole team. “I also love talking to my teammates and having a good time which helps get rid of a lot of my nerves before games,” she explains.
On and off the field, Kenney is renowned for her lacrosse prowess and her positive influence. Throughout the Prep League and the regular season, which concluded last week with a decisive 14-3 victory over Heritage Christian in North Hills, Kenney averaged 3.3 goals and 1.5 assists per game. After finishing third in league, the team is gearing up for their opening CIF match in the first week of May.
Kenney values the sense of community developed within the team. “I really enjoy the warmth and camaraderie of the lacrosse team,” she says. Her teammates also speak highly of her. Senior McKenna Morris describes Kenney as “hard-working and a beast on the field,” while also noting her kindness and great mentorship for younger players.
Kenney plays a crucial role in supporting her team by leading drills and offering constructive advice to newer teammates. “I try to support my team by giving players helpful tips in a way that is constructive rather than criticizing,” she notes. “Everyone is super welcoming, and we love to hype each other up through everything.”
Kenney’s journey in lacrosse began at the age of nine while living in Concord, Massachusetts, where she quickly fell in love with the sport. Her passion led her to several years of club lacrosse on the East Coast, and she credits the combination of school and club lacrosse, along with countless hours of practice with her sister, for shaping her into the player she is today.
Having moved to Southern California before her freshman year at Chadwick, Kenney is now preparing for a new chapter. This fall, she will attend Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, to study public health. Although she will step away from lacrosse to focus on academics, she reflects positively on her time at Chadwick. “Everyone at Chadwick is so supportive and hard-working, and although we may not win every game, everyone has a smile on their face and never gives up,” she says. “I’ve had an amazing experience playing with these very special girls.”
