Passing The Mainsheet Pen

As the end of the school year approaches, The Mainsheet is filled with a mix of emotions. Our final issue is a whirlwind of training new editors, saying goodbye to our senior editors, racing to get our photos in on time, and crafting an issue that our community will enjoy. It’s a considerable effort, to say the least.

The toughest part, however, is bidding farewell. The Class of 2024 has been pivotal to Mainsheet, with nearly all of our Editorial Board members hailing from this graduating class. Our standout roster included section editors Emilie Alden, Alexis Martin, Tish Melton, and Alana Reyes. Parker Albarian and Abby Luong, who dedicated countless hours and lost a lot of sleep to ensure each issue was polished and error-free, navigated us through it all as our exceptional Editors in Chief. Their absence will be deeply felt.

Parker and Abby have left big shoes to fill. From grappling with the basics of InDesign to surviving late nights, we have been fortunate to learn from the best. As we step into the role of Editors in Chief, we thought you might like to get to know the new faces who will guide Mainsheet next year.

Wrigley Zbyszewski, a rising senior, has spent countless hours in the Roessler basement, Middle School classrooms, and the Pure Bean coffee shop in Manhattan Beach, all fueled by her love for Mainsheet. Outside of the paper, she has zero free time, no caffeine in her system, and a knack for pestering math teachers who might not have asked for it.

Rising junior Evan Yao joined the staff as a freshman and has since mastered the art of creating scoreboards and bugging the athletic department for win-loss records each issue. His go-to order at Pure Bean during layout weekends is either an Iced Americano or Iced Matcha, fueling his long editing sessions.

As we wrap up this year, there’s much to look forward to. With seniors’ last day of classes behind us, the dynamic of the school has shifted, with juniors and sophomores stepping up into new roles. We’ve seen an increase in spikeball games, a slight rise in UV levels, and the long-awaited end of AP tests.

The end of the year naturally prompts reflection on the past school year. Despite setbacks, we’ve grown individually and as a community, learning to support one another in times of need. Celebrating our successes and coming together as a community has been a highlight of these past few months.

With end-of-year events like Tree, Awards, and Prom on the horizon, we’ve had the chance to connect, cheer each other on, and showcase our not-so-stellar dance moves to our peers and the lucky faculty chaperones.

Looking ahead to next year, we’re excited to announce our dedicated Editorial Board: rising juniors Cady Maas (Features), Lina Gu (Opinions), Jeanie Chua (Centerfold & Back Page), Anders Gustafson (Arts & Entertainment), Tommy Li (News), and Sebastian Polonis (Sports). Hope Kim will take on the newly created role of Design Coordinator, joining Website Manager Abbi Davies and Social Coordinator Kayla Grohman, also rising juniors, on the board to ensure a smooth and streamlined editing process.

Reflecting on the 2023-2024 school year, we’re proud of our achievements. We published our first-ever 20-page satire issue, The Misprint, and designed our very own Mainsheet merchandise, thanks to Parker, that rivals WickMath’s infamous hoodies.

Though we don’t yet know what next year will bring, we’re certain it will be an adventure. And you can count on Mainsheet to capture all the highlights.

We’d like to extend a heartfelt THANK YOU to our loyal readers. Your unwavering support and encouragement fuel our passion for producing quality content in every issue. We hope you enjoy our final issue of the year. Good luck with finals, stay safe, and enjoy your summer break!

All our love,
Wrigley & Evan
